The Great Western Chemical Co.’s Fairbanks facility was developed as multiple phases of design-build work spread over a four year period.
The first work entailed the design and construction of a hydrochloric acid transfer facility. The second phase was the preparation of a 10 acre parcel for a future chemical facility site, clearing, excavation, removal of frozen soils, dewatering, backfill, 1250’ railroad siding, 1000 LF of 80’ wide roadway and over 3000’ of fencing. An 800 amp 480 power service was provided for future use. The third phase of work installed a chemical transfer for off-loading of chemicals from rail cars into tank storage or into trucks. Phase IV involved the construction of two steel buildings with metal siding and roofing. The project provided a chemical blending facility, complete with tanks, controls, process piping and explosion proof electrical installation. The fifth and final phase provided site work for truck access, a 15,000 SF storage building, 800 LF of rail siding, and relocation of a modular office building.
The mechanical and electrical systems were very sophisticated and demanded constant quality control attention by the contracting team. The owner, who has many similar facilities nationwide, complimented our team by saying it was the finest installation he had seen.
