Savoonga, Alaska is a Yup’ik community with a population of 695 located on St. Lawrence Island in the Bering Sea, 164 miles west of Nome. Safe air transportation is vital to the community due to its isolated location and lack of a seaport. Hazardous flying conditions throughout much of the year compound the access problems. The Alaska Department of Transportation is upgrading the Savoonga Airport to make it as safe as possible.
