Savoonga Airport SurveysSavoonga, Alaska is a Yup’ik community with a population of 695 located on St. Lawrence Island in the Bering Sea, 164 miles west of Nome. Safe air transportation is vital to the community due to its isolated location and lack of a seaport. Hazardous flying conditions throughout much of the year compound the access problems. The Alaska Department of Transportation is upgrading the Savoonga Airport to make it as safe as possible.

PDC surveyors provided the following types of survey data for airport improvements:

  • Highly accurate airport positioning surveys based on National Geodetic Survey guidelines for Primary and Secondary Airport Control Stations
  • Design topography surveys of the airport property for runway improvement projects
  • Federal Aviation Administration Obstruction Surveys based on FAA Specification 405 guidelines for airport safety
  • Project drawings using AutoCAD layering conventions to meet FAA Advisory Circular 150/5300-18 specifications so that the drawings can be incorporated into the FAA’s nationwide airport GIS database
