Mechanical Engineering
PDC brings a full range of mechanical design and support services to the table, providing our clients with tailored solutions that meet their needs, culminating in a successful project. Our engineers possess a wide range of skills which have effectively been applied to both simple and complex systems in temperate and cold regions environments, in both urban and remote locations. PDC offers mechanical engineering support at every stage of a project whether it is concept development, planning, RFP development, design services, bid phase, and/or construction support. PDC’s mechanical experience ranges from utilities, to simple building remodels, to entirely new facilities.
Utilities
Utility systems provide power, heat, water, sewer, natural gas, oil and whatever else our buildings might need for a functional facility. PDC specializes in the planning and design of utility infrastructure, including distribution systems, treatment, and support facilities. Whether they are in a building, direct buried, in a utilidor, on grade, or elevated above grade, our team can ensure that the systems you need get to your facility in a safe, reliable, user-friendly, and cost effective manner. Our mechanical engineers specialize in steam, condensate, hydronic, waste heat, domestic/fire water, sewer, fuel-oil, and fuel-gas utility storage and distribution systems to meet your utility design needs.
Commissioning
Commissioning is the systematic process of verifying systems operate correctly and efficiently. This process ensures that systems operate to meet their energy saving potential. It also reduces warranty calls and user discomfort after construction, which can be a significant issue for remote installations. Due to the complexity of today’s mechanical and electrical systems, Owners should rely on the specialized expertise of professional consultants to be the Commissioning Agent on their projects. PDC has certified, experienced, and knowledgeable Commissioning Agents that can fill the role of Commissioning Agent. They can also be your Representative throughout the commissioning process. The Commissioning Agent not only checks the systems during construction, but they can be a key advocate for you during the design stage. Project delivery services can include condition surveys, running charrettes at the beginning of a project to quickly reach consensus, reviewing the design and providing third party input, field verifying construction conformance with the design documents, and validating that the automatic systems within the building operate as designed and intended. Whatever your commissioning needs are, PDC’s team of certified commissioning agents is ready to help.
HVAC
HVAC stands for Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning. It is the science of environmental comfort, and is a critical part of a building’s functionality. PDC’s mechanical engineers are experts in HVAC systems design, providing superior thermal comfort and indoor air quality so that building occupants can be healthy and productive. Our designs focus on energy conservation and low-maintenance solutions that reduce our client’s long term operating budgets. PDC’s team has extensive experience in all regions of Alaska’s diverse climate. They have provided HVAC in many different building types, including hospitals, schools, maintenance garages, military complexes, laboratories, office spaces, residences, and even remote science stations in Antarctica. Let PDC’s engineers develop an HVAC solution that meets your needs.
Plumbing
PDC specializes in all forms of plumbing design including residential, commercial, industrial, and institutional systems. We have specialized experience in health care design including back-flow prevention, water pre-treatment, ultra-filtration, sterilization, domestic water heating, and medical gas systems. On the industrial side, we design compressed air systems, garage drains, interceptors, sumps, oil/water separator systems, non-potable water systems, commercial sewage lift stations, and dewatering systems. We design plumbing for commercial kitchens including high temperature hot water supplies, commercial food waste grinders and dishwashers, and grease interceptors. In summary, we do it all!
Sustainability
Sustainability is one of those buzz words that mean something different to everyone who uses it. To PDC, sustainability is an ethical responsibility that we include in our day-to-day design efforts. We strive to provide the most energy efficient and dependable designs, with the lowest environmental impact, while still meeting the project budget. This allows our engineers to look outside of the box for creative design solutions, that might not normally be considered, but that do the best at meeting the project and client needs. PDC is known for our innovative solutions to some of the toughest design challenges in the Arctic and Antarctic. Examples of sustainable solutions that PDC engineers have designed and implemented are: a hybrid solar hot water/ground source heating system, variable refrigerant air source heat pump systems, common loop radiant floor cooling/heating, thermal storage, micro-turbines and other Combined Heat and Power systems, and small hydro-turbines – just to name a few. Sustainability is in all of our designs; let us work it into yours!
