Significantly adding to its 3D modeling and surveying capabilities, PDC Engineers recently acquired a 3D laser scanner, the Faro Focus S70. Lidar scanners, like the Faro Focus S70, are utilized to digitally capture the dimensions and spatial relationships of physical objects with rapidly repeating laser light. Mounted and rotating on a tripod, the scanner creates a point cloud image that accurately replicates scanned objects and spaces.
The S70 has a maximum range of 70m, an accuracy to within 1mm, and a scan rate of 976,000 points per second.
The models captured in high speed by the S70 are incredibly accurate, and greatly reduce field time for surveyors – cutting costs and reducing risk in high liability areas such as traffic corridors or other hazardous locations. In addition, the quickly captured point cloud data can import directly into other existing engineering software, allowing for seamless coordination and offsite review.
This unprecedented precision, paired with the flexibility of stitching large images together by conducting multiple scans, allows PDC to offer clients an even higher level of service and efficiency.
With our new Faro Focus S70, we have the expanded capability to:
- generate 3D models for structures when as-built drawings are not available
- minimize conflicts and change orders between new and existing components during facility upgrade projects
- quickly collect and model existing conditions
- validate the geometry of an entire job when tolerance requirements are extremely tight or when precise survey of site damage is required
