The five-level, 142,500-sf Transportation Center provides parking for 250 cars as well as a Volunteers-in-Policing office, restrooms, and a heated waiting area for bus passengers. All of the parking spaces have headbolt heater outlets for winter use.
Patron security was an important consideration. Design features to enhance security include:
- Open layout without interior columns
- Interior and exterior lighting
- Closed-circuit television cameras
The structure is ramped from floor to floor to provide efficient parking areas. Wide bays allow for an open and secure facility. Post-tensioned concrete girders span from the exterior wall to the center of the building, eliminating the need for interior columns. A spiral steel stair rises up to all levels through a glazed circular shaft.
The structure is framed with concrete to support all gravity and lateral loads. Moment frames resist the lateral loads, while post-tensioned slabs and girders carry the gravity loads.
