This newly constructed facility replaces current VA facilities in Anchorage, and is the first facility owned by VA in Alaska. The new, 185,000 sf, $50 million facility is co-located on a site adjacent to the existing Elmendorf Hospital and shares various utility infrastructures. PDC is providing mechanical, electrical and fire protection engineering services.
Mechanical systems include complex heating, ventilation/cooling, air distribution, special exhaust systems, plumbing and medical gas. Special attention was given to air quality, environmental control, and sustainable design. The facility shares heat generation, medical gas, and ground water based cooling with the adjacent Elmendorf Hospital. Utilities infrastructure were upgraded in the existing hospital central plant and extended to the VA facility.
Because of the facility’s size, multiple electrical services coordinated with a single standby generator source have been included in the design. Systems include primary power extensions to site, secondary power service and distribution, emergency power, lighting, communications, data and life-safety.
